Site Information
Kauai, Hawaii is known as the Garden Island. Our island is one of the wettest spots on earth and rainfall can reach 460 inches on the east side of Mt. Waialeale. Kauai has a current population of approximately 60,000 and is the fourth largest and the oldest island in the Hawaiian island chain, with 552 square miles and 90 miles of coastline.
There are currently 7 public elementary schools, 3 public middle schools, and 3 public high schools. Kauai Department of Education strives to provide and promote strong educational programs and services for students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, partially-sighted, or deaf-blind, including students one of the above with multiple disabilities. Services are provided for the student in each student's least restrictive environment through differentiated teaching and technological support.
Kauai's Deaf Education Department currently has a team of two Itinerant Teachers of the Deaf, three Educational Interpreters, and Educational Aides trained in American Sign Language. Kauai County currently has approximately 60 students identified as Deaf or Hard-of Hearing. Due to the small population, geographic size, and location Kauai residents have limited access to the Deaf community. Deaf and Hard-of Hearing students have little access to Deaf role models, language (ASL) models, or Deaf Culture. This site strives to decrease isolation and improve access for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students and their families by providing resources and materials on Deafness, Deaf Culture, Products and Services.
